way to go. >> a homecoming celebration for the pride of philadelphia. the taney dragons. cheering crowds welcomed the little league team back to the city of brotherly love this afternoon. and there's lots more taney-related festivities to come. we'll have more on that in just a few minutes. but first, california earthquake. governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency for parts of california wine country. the magnitude 6.0 quake hit just before 3:30 a.m. pacific time. and the epicenter was located just six miles southwest of

napa, california. it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit that area in decades. the earthquake ruptured water mains and gas lines, left two adults and a child critically hurt, and sent residents running out of their homes in fear. nbc's mike tasell has the latest on the impact from napa valley. >> reporter: it was 3:00 in the morning local time when this record 6.0 earthquake struck. you can see how furiously it shook everything in this convenience store. the epicenter was about six miles from napa, california. it rattled businesses, homes, and some people's nerves. >> i just held her there. shaking. i stepped on some things along the way that cut my feet a little bit. >> reporter: this is the largest earthquake to hit the san francisco area in 25 years. buildings in napa's historic district had crumbled corners, sending piles of bricks onto cars parked nearby. >> we are working on security in the downtown area. some of the shopping centers. we are having -- we will have for several days a high police presence. >> reporter: the quake left cracks in roads, broke water

mains, and officials say they had reports of more than 100 gas line leaks. sparking at least six fires. a blaze in a mobile home park destroyed four structures. the town in american canyon was closest to its epicenter and on one of hits grocery stores there was also as much on the floor was there was on the shelves. but damage to the winery region worries a lot of people here in napa. >> we're looking at a whole lot of cases of wine that need to be picked back up again and hopefully there's not too much stuff broken. >> reporter: dozens of people were treated at nearby hospitals, and a child is in critical condition tonight, struck by pieces of a crumbling fireplace. this was an earthquake that was felt as far as 200 miles south of where i'm standing. and also as far east as the nevada border. i'm mike tasell, nbc news, napa, california. >> nbc 10 meteorologist ted florenda's brother lives in the area where the quake struck. he tweeted what his brother had to say about it this morning. he said "loud bangs followed by

violent shaking of entire house for what seemed like froofr." "lots of things fallen off shelves. biggest concern are huge power lines outside house." now we continue our confirm with nbc 10 first alert meteorologist brittany shipp. that is one of the strongest earthquakes to hit that part of california in years. >> yeah, this is the strongest to hit the san francisco bay area in 25 years. most of the damage is reported in napa county. and also to the southwest of napa. so they're now calling it the south napa earthquake. the magnitude was at 6. so that means strong shaking, strong sudden movement, and moderate damage, which you did see in the video that we just showed you. locally, our temperatures recovered from yesterday. so we're a lot warmer. we're at 79 degrees in philadelphia. 79 in pottstown. 78 in allentown. low 70s in the poconos. plenty of sunshine for us today. it even felt warm out there. 76 in millville. a little bit cooler at the atlantic city airport at 72 degrees. if you're heading out in the next couple of hours, it's going to be really comfortable. this is a nice way to end your

center. the group was about to jump on the bus and head to new york city for an appearance on the "today" show tomorrow morning. but their first stop today was at love park. [ cheers and applause ] the bus carrying the taney dragons was escorted to love park by police on motorcycles. hundreds cheered on the world series finalists, who've made philly proud. after a congratulatory chat on the bus with mayor nutter, the dragons met privately with their parents. ♪ then each of the dozen teammates and their families walked onto the stage to the song that's become philadelphia's song of champions. >> the philadelphia champion taney dragons! >> reporter: each player was introduced to the roaring crowd, including their famous cover girl pitcher. >> only needs one name. number 3, mo'ne! [ cheers and applause ]

>> reporter: when her coach asked about her favorite part of the last two amazing weeks, she hinted at her future aspirations. >> my favorite part was talking to geno auriemma from uconn. the uconn coach. >> we grabbed mo'ne's stepdad just after she spoke. >> only thing that could have been better than this is us winning the whole thing. and we're not upset about that either. we have the experience. >> reporter: during the hour rally we also spoke to people whose hearts have been won over by this little league team from south philly. >> i think she's a great role model for girls. i think it's wonderful. >> reporter: wonderful would also describe the reaction to this home run announcement. >> on wednesday the city of philadelphia will in fact sponsor a parade recognizing -- [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: and also on wednesday the phillies will be honoring the taney dragons just prior to the phillies'-nationals home game. and one dad told us on friday five teammates who didn't get a chance to celebrate their

birthdays while the team was in williamsport will have an official birthday party here in philadelphia. in south philly monique braxton, nbc 10 news. >> and stay with nbc 10 for your complete coverage of the taney dragons. our matt delucia will bring us live reports on the team from 30 rock tomorrow morning on nbc 10 news today. you can catch taney's appearance on the "today" show which begins at 7:00 a.m. right here on nbc 10. new at 6:00, an american held hostage since 2012 by an al qaeda-linked group in syria has been freed. the obama administration says peter theo curtis of massachusetts is now safe outside of syria. the united nations says it helped with the handover in the village in the golan heights and that curtis was released to american authorities after a medical checkup. now, this comes days after islamic militants posted a video showing the murder of american journalist james foley. today a mass of remembrance was

held for foley in his hometown of rochester, new hampshire. it was attended by his parents and hundreds of others. foley was kidnapped in 2012 while covering the syrian uprisi uprising. isis says his killing was in retaliation for u.s. air strikes in northern iraq. well, here at home the search continues for the gunman who shot and killed two women in philadelphia. the pair was found shot to death inside a home in mayfair yesterday. it happened on the 4700 block of vista street near edmonds street. we're told both women were in their mid 50s. one of the victims was found downstairs. the other upstairs. neighbors tell us the woman who lived in the home was like a grandmother to everyone on the block. a deadly accident shuts down part of the interstate for hours. what was to blame for this crash involving a motorcycle? plus a half naked man causes quite a scene in philadelphia overnight. what he says caused his so-called delusional behavior. day dreaming again?

[announcer] the pennsylvania lottery. bring your dreams to life. a deadly motorcycle crash shut down several lanes of interstate 95 in delaware county today. it happened just before 10:00 this morning in ridley township. a 24-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail and was thrown from his bike. two southbound lanes of i-95 were closed following the crash. they have since reopened. we have new information about a report of a half-naked man thrown from a car in philadelphia's pennsport neighborhood. turns out the man was not the victim of an accident but was instead the alleged aggressor in an assault. police tell us the 57-year-old man became delusional, ran into the street banging on passing vehicles and claiming to be the messiah. he told the police he hit a man

inside one of the cars and fell to the ground when the man opened the door. no charges have been filed. back to school. nbc 10 is there as st. joe's welcomes its upper classmen. plus we'll tell you how the school is making history with its new students. and we dried out from yesterday's rain. but as we head into next week, we are really going to warm things up. temperatures pushing back close to 90 degrees. i'll let you know what to expect coming up in my first alert seven-day forecast.

k. one philadelphia community are also marking the end of summer with a neighborhood barbecue. and there was plenty of food and fun for the entire family in kensington this afternoon. dozens of people came out for the community's summer closeout barbecue celebration. kids got their faces painted and made balloon animals while moms and dads enjoyed some delicious food and got to catch up good evening. this was a nice way to end your weekend. and as we head into next week, it will feel a little bit more like summer, with temperatures warming close to 90 degrees. we'll see plenty of sunshine, dry conditions but as we approach your holiday weekend we do have a chance of showers back in the forecast. right now for saturday and sunday. i'll go over the details in your seven-day. but a look outside right now at camel beach mountain water park where everyone's having a good time with these nice and comfortable conditions. for philadelphia we're at 79 degrees. just a few clouds.

humidity's at 50%. feels like it's 80 degrees. light wind speeds out of the east at five miles per hour and throughout the rest of the area in the poconos, 70s, 80 degrees in reading. comfortable in ben salem at 78 degrees. low 70s in atlantic city. stone harbor a little cooler than the city right now. at 72 degrees. and we're in the mid 70s in dover. closer look throughout the rest of our country, we are seeing warmer temperatures, especially in cincinnati at 88. take a look at st. louis. 96 degrees. wichita in the triple digits. so we do have a ridge of high pressure that's situated right over the midwest. that's going to shift closer to us. so our temperatures are also going to go up as we head into the next couple of days. so high pressure's going to stay in control. we've already seen a warm-up from yesterday. a 24-hour temperature change shows we're up 14 degrees in pottstown, up 11 degrees in wilmington and up about five degrees in millville. our average for this time of year continues to go down as we continue to wind down summer. 84 is our average for this time of year tomorrow. but above average at 85 degrees.

and as we head into tuesday, temperatures will warm to 87. that's not as warm as we'll get. wednesday is the warmest day of the week pushing closer to 90 degrees. but over the next 24 hours you will notice plenty of sunshine for us especially as we head into the start of your workweek. we'll see clear skies heading into tonight as well. so a really nice 24 hours on tap for us. 61 degrees our overnight low for philadelphia. 55 for our suburbs to the north and west. heading into tomorrow even warmer than what we're seeing today. temperatures range between 83 and 85 degrees. your seven-day forecast shows we'll continue to warm things up. plenty of sunshine. it's going to be a nice three days here for the phillies game. 88 degrees on wednesday. if you take a look at thursday, 84 degrees. friday we drop back down to the low 80s. but then the clouds return. even a chance of showers heading into saturday and sunday. >> nice couple of days for the phillies coming up. and a nice day for them today. the phillies look for their first back-to-back series wins

hi. i'm team fadool from comcast sportsnet. they took philadelphia on quite a ride. now the city's giving back to the taney dragons. taney's storybook ride may have ended in williamsport, but it's not going to be soon forgotten. mayor nutter called it a taney fever at love park today as the team returned here to the city of brotherly love amidst big cheers. the city will host a parade for taney on wednesday. taney outfielder kai cummings was pleasantly surprised by the

raucous reception. >> i thought it was going to be a little different. i thought there was going to be a little -- i don't know why i thought it was going to be different. i thought it was going to be more like a picnic-type thing. but seeing so many people come out here was great. >> a lot more than a picnic. the team that knocked taney out, chicago, illinois taking on south korea for the world series title today in williamsport. fifth inning, 3-1 south korea in front. solo shot to center. check out the celebration. that's right. that's a little usain bolt. now 7-1 in the sixth. hi chan choi with a blast of his own. time to celebrate for south korea. they are the little league world series champs. they beat illinois 11-4. not only will the city hold a parade for taney on wednesday, but the phillies will also honor the local little leaguers at citizens bank park in a ceremony prior to that night's game. all fans in attendance will receive a taney t-shirt and some of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the taney

little league. speaking of the phils, looking for a second straight series win today against the cardinals. jerome williams signing autographs for a youngster pregame. williams helped his own cause in the second. lays down the safety squeeze bunt. run comes in. the phils go up 2-0. williams excellent on the mound as well. in the fourth gets matt adams looking. does the same to matt carpenter in the fifth. williams eight innings of one-run ball. fills up 5-1 in the seventh. jimmy rollins at the dish and he connects on this one. two-run blast to left. that's his 16th of the season. phils win it 7-1 over the cardinals and williams gets the win for the phillies. he's enjoying the change of scenery. >> i've been in the american league for a long time. coming over to the national league i think i can contribute in different ways. so i think just -- i'm just happy i'm actually doing the job that i've been doing. >> wins will do that.

to football now. the eagles opened their season two weeks from today when the jaguars come to lincoln financial field. but one preseason game remains this thursday against the jets. the starters will not play in this one against new york, including jeremy maclin and lesean mccoy who both got a little banged up against the steelers. mccoy's taped thumb was taped today at practice. maclin missed all of last year with a torn acl and said friday's scare caused him a brief bit of concern. >> obviously, when something like that happens, you know, i get flashbacks. but i don't -- i try not to think about it. i've come a long way. it's been over a year now. i'm ready to go. >> you know, spiking the ball. doing everything you need to do. blocking. everything. >> well, quarterback matt barkley will start thursday's preseason finale against the jets. the second-year pro has been solid in the exhibition slate. he's a four-year starter at usc

a messy way to spend a sunday down the shore. the renault winery held its 150th anniversary and grape-stomping festival. even those who are too young to drink got in the spirit and hopped in the barrels this afternoon. besides all the wine prepping guests got to do, seasonal cocktails, beer, and of course wine was served. >> they earned their wine after that. >> they sure did. lots of work has to be done for that. that's nbc 10 news for now. for brittany, amy and i i'm denise nakano. we'll see you back here tonight at 11:00. nbc "nightly news" is next.
